On two separate occasions, Elias would lose to Orton in a championship match. Seemingly infuriated by the events, Elias smashed his guitar over the head of Orton, giving him a concussion, and forcing him to relinquish the belt. GM Daniel Bryan hosted a tournament for the vacant title; Elias defeated Tye Dillinger and Kofi Kingston to get to the final, whereas Roode defeated Baron Corbin and The Miz. The final was supposed to happen on an episode of SmackDown, but Orton hit an RKO out of nowhere on both men before the match started. He cashed in his rematch clause, and Paige made it a triple threat for SummerSlam. During this match, Bray Wyatt would return and align himself with the Hardys, attacking Braun Strowman. The Hardys would win the RAW Tag Team Championships, and would defend them against The Club and Titus Worldwide before being confronted by the debuting Sanity! Both strange and weird teams would go back and forth over the next few weeks, leading to Kurt Angle making this match official. But he was brought back into reality when he was challenged by AJ Styles. After one successful title defence, Styles sought for backup in Finn Balor, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson. Their consistent beat downs, cheap shots and distractions cost Reigns his belt. Now, Roman has only one thing on his mind. Revenge. He destroyed Gallows and Anderson, and set his sights in Finn. The Empress would claim that “Nobody is ready for Asuka”, but there was still one woman left in her path; The Irish Lass Kicker, Becky Lynch. Asuka attacked Lynch backstage, which broke her collar bone, turning heel in the process. After healing, she challenged Asuka to a championship match, and vowed to reveal Asuka to be the overrated bitch she truly is. He then continued to defend the belt successfully against the likes of Ariya Daivari, Jack Gallagher and Drew Gulak. However, his attitude quickly changed with more victories and more momentum. He started calling himself “The Saviour Of 205 Live” and “God’s Gift”. This wasn’t taken too kindly by GM Drake Maverick, who ensured that he would find the most experienced and most gifted athlete to put him in his place. At Money in the Bank, Rusev Day stepped up to the task, but were defeated and the post-match beatdown left both men on the shelf. The same fate fell on The Revival, who were taken out at Battleground. After defeating local talent, The Usos returned to SmackDown, along with The Revival and Rusev Day. The combined effort of three teams took out Harper and Rowan, and GM Paige made this match official for SummerSlam. Perhaps they were even more stunned when his partner was revealed to be the Samoan Submission Machine, Samoa Joe! They won the titles from The Bar, and seemed to be working well as a cohesive unit. However, at MITB, Joe turned his back on Braun, leaving him to lose the belts. Joe explained his actions, saying that somebody had made him realise that he was being held back as a Tag Team wrestler, and that person was Triple H. Strowman didn’t take kindly to this, and attacked Joe savagely on 3 separate occasions. Being in no shape to compete, Braun fought The Game at Battleground instead, but lost thanks to Joe’s distraction. This only angered Braun even more, and more beat downs occurred. Trying to restore peace, GM Kurt Angle had no choice but to make a no holds barred match for SummerSlam. Who will be victorious? Luckily, a returning Dean Ambrose made the save and forced Ziggler to retreat. Rollins hugged Ambrose, but Ambrose took him in to the Dirty Deeds. When forced to explain his actions, Dean said how Rollins “used” the Shield to get back up to the top, as he couldn’t resist not being in the spotlight. He challenged Lesnar to a match at the Biggest Party of the Summer, which Paul Heyman accepted. Styles thought he was untouchable, and that he was the greatest to ever lace a pair of boots. John Cena was next to confront him, saying that to be the man, you gotta beat the man, and said that he was the trailblazer for the company for 12 years, and Styles had only been a 2 year investment. After these comments, he was attacked by The Club.
