AEW and NJPW's complicated relationship

It’s notable that New Japan put its U.S. title on a guy who can’t even work for them in the United States. Jon Moxley’s deal is AEW has his rights in the United States. He’s free to work New Japan when it doesn’t conflict with AEW. He’s allowed to be in the G1, it’s fine — but not U.S. shows. AEW didn’t allow for that because that’s basically the situation, they’ve got his U.S. rights.

So he’s never been booked for Dallas. He’s never been announced for Dallas. I think there was an assumption because everyone in the G1 works every single date they work tag matches underneath on the shows they’re not on, but this is the exception to the rule because it’s the United States show.

It’s still up in the air whether Moxley will be recognised as champion or wear the belt at Fyter Fest, which, ultimately is both up to Tony Khan agreeing to it as well as New Japan agreeing to it. He did neither on his independent dates with Northeast Wrestling this past weekend.
This shows how much things have changed, and not for the better between the two sides. Earlier this year, when New Japan had the visa issues that kept all of their Japanese talent off an American tour, and AEW was just starting, it was noted that they could have saved the tour in the eyes of the fans by using Omega. Some of the dates were when Omega was under control so they could have used him no matter what. One or two dates would have been after the contract expired, at which point he may have signed with AEW, but AEW had no problems with allowing him to work the entire tour. Of course New Japan didn’t even think in that direction nor have they made a play for Omega so far this year. But it’s gone from wanting to build a relationship to that no longer being the case.

That really sucks to be fair. I kinda really hoped that with NJPW's relationship souring with ROH and the fact AEW started with one of there bigger stars plus Jericho and Moxley that things could have lined up well for a AEW-NJPW partnership similar to what New Japan had with WCW in the 90's.

Alas there is probably still some unresolving questions related to the Elite's departure that haven't been fully healed. Again it's a shame but I still really hope we can see this partnership if both companies are willing.

Now its not as easy as it seems for these two to have a relationship and in fact its quite confident. Firstly NJPW have an agreement with Ring of Honor who are a direct competitor to AEW therefore disallowing any working agreement. Second of all NJPW have a working agreement with CMLL who are direct competitors to AAA who are associated with AEW, once again making it difficult for a working relationship. I honestly don't mind that there is no working agreement and disallowing them to work NJPW in the US I think is a great rule because they are competitors

Its sucks that Mox can't be in the G1 Show in Dallas but honestly its fine. NJPW has relationships with companies that are competition for AEW so it wouldn't work for all parties involved. In the future tho, NJPW and AEW Partnership would be beneficial in my opinion, allowing guys from japan to get exposure with a big company like AEW.

It makes sense that these two have a complicated relationship due to the aforementioned companies that they’re connected with being competitors of the others. A relationship would be great to see because they both have a great plethora of talent that I’d love to see cross between the shows but it’s understandable.

It's a tough one this. On one hand it would be cool to see a proper NJPW VS AEW Pay-per-view or an AEW/NJPW crossover event of some variety but on the other hand If they continue to compete with each other this will drive both their products to be better than each others. Currently it appears they'll have different schedules due to NJPW being a touring company and AEW aiming to have a weekly television show. It is also possible for them to both compete and have a crossover pay-per-view as New Japan has had a history of this with a rivalry with All Japan Pro Wrestling Culminating with the First Wrestlekingdom. So maybe there still is a chance of the two working together on the off occasion in a ceasefire sort of manner while also competing with each other to drive an increase in the product of the two shows.

For a beginging company AEW has a strong enough roster to succeed without NJPW at the moment though for International crossover purposes it would be a strong relationship to have for both companies. As Julius mentioned above with the current CMLL relationship NJPW has it makes it even harder for both sides to talk even if they wanted to attempt it. Wrestling unities are suddenly a lot more important and lucrative in 2019 which is interesting to see. Do you think with the NJPW possibility at a standstill for the time being that AEW might eventually find themselves partnering with AJPW or NOAH in the future?
