A @Hans (WWF) and @Sheridan (WCW,) December 1997 Total Extreme Wrestling diary.

The Montreal Screwjob was a historic shoot betrayal of reigning WWF Champion Bret Hart by owner of the World Wrestling Federation, Vince McMahon, during the main event bout of Survivor Series, a wrestling pay-per-view event held in Montreal, Quebec on November 9th, 1997. A changing of the wrestling match's pre-decided finish (known as a "screwjob" in wrestling kayfabe) was thought up by Vince McMahon and detailed to Bret Hart's match opponent and long-term rival, Shawn Michaels. The Montreal Screwjob was executed when match official, Earl Hebner, under orders from Vince McMahon, called for the bell to ring even though Bret Hart had not submitted while being held in the sharpshooter by Shawn Michaels, a move which was well associated with Bret Hart. Shawn Michaels was crowned as the new WWF Heavyweight Championship holder, winning the belt via submission while the audience in attendance expressed their fury and Bret Hart was outraged and confused in the ring.

Mankind vs Shawn Michaels (c) - WWF World Heavyweight Championship

Shawn Michaels won the WWF title from Bret Hart in controversy weeks ago at the Survivor Series in Montreal, and as been the talk of the wrestling industry. HBK made it very clear the next night on RAW that he sent Bret Hart packing to the boys down under. Shawn Michaels, the man involved in the departure of former world champ Bret Hart, must now defend his newly won title at WWF In Your House 1997. After the screwjob, D-Generation X (HBK & HHH) made fun of the fact that they kicked out the entire Hart Foundation, out of the WWF. It wasn’t until long that they decided to join forces with the New Age Outlaws and let them be apart of D-Generation X. Michaels, Triple H, Chyna, Road Dogg, and Billy Gunn, the force known as D-Generation X!

However the next challenger for that coveted WWF Title was someone deranged, someone more sadistic. After HBK defeated Animal in the main event of RAW is WAR, Mankind appeared on the titantron, and his message was wide and clear, he wanted that WWF Title! For weeks he has seen HBK taunting, and making a mockery of business that Mankind is so passionate about. Weeks leading up to WWF In Your House, HBK made it very clear that he plans on not only defeating Mankind, but also plans on getting rid of Mankind. However Mankind’s passion on become the world champ resonated with the audience and the people watching at home, and with an alliance with Stone Cold Steve Austin, Mankind may very well be the next WWF World Heavyweight Champion!

Rise of Stone Cold Steve Austin

Steve Austin’s road to superstardom hit a rough patch in August 1997 when he was infamously injured by Owen Hart and was sidelined for months and was forced to vacate his newly won the WWF Intercontinental Title. However Austin would return at Survivor Series and win back the IC title from Owen Hart but shortly afterwards would have to hand over his IC Title to The Rock due to the orders of Vince McMahon. Now Austin’s attention have been with Triple H who has been making remarks about Austin’s neck issues and Austin confronted Triple H about it. Vince once again got involved trying to cause no conflict. This would make the rattle snake one pissed of S.O.B.

The week afterwards, D-Generation X would handcuff Mankind and was looking to beat him down until Austin showed up and saved Mankind from the attack. Austin had Mankind’s back has they both of a common enemy in DX. They would then compete in a Tag Team against HBK and HHH on the next RAW and come on top as the victors. Austin big break into becoming a megastar is now in the cross-hairs of Triple H. With this battle between Triple H and Steve Austin happening at In Your House, who will emerge as the victor?

Kane vs The Undertaker

For months Paul Bearer stated “Kane’s coming, Kane’s coming” and finally at Badd Blood 1997, Kane finally arrived as he costed his brother The Undertaker his Hell in a Cell match with Shawn Michaels. Kane has been on terror, mauling through his opponents. His wrath of destruction is being felt throughout the entire WWF. The Undertaker has been ambushed for weeks leading up to In Your House, Kane attacking him and for the first time in the deadman’s career, he’s the one getting outplayed in mind games. The Undertaker isn’t going to stand for this any longer and the deadman promises to defeat his brother Kane at In Your House, while Paul Bearer will finally get rid of the Undertaker once Kane destroys him. Even though Taker refused to face his brother Kane, he no longer has an option and must face his own flesh and blood at WWF In Your House. Who will walk out as the winner in this personal rivalry?

Predictions for WWF In Your House 1997

-  WWF World Heavyweight Championship match
Mankind vs Shawn Michaels (c) - He just won the title so it's way to soon for him to lose it.

Steve Austin vs Triple H - Austin is your top babyface. Triple H is still not there so I am going with Austin

Kane vs The Undertaker - This will be a No Contest since you said there would be one

- WWF World Tag Team Championships match
The New Age Outlaws (c) vs Legion of Doom - Going with the Outlaws to retain.

Ken Shamrock vs Jeff Jarrett - I like Shamrock over JJ so I feel he should win

Vader vs Goldust vs Steve Blackman - Vader if I recall is a freelancer so he will eventually be gone. And while I like Steve Blackman, Goldust just has a better upside

- WWF Light Heavyweight Championships match
Brain Christopher vs TAKA Michinoku - The real life result should happen here.

- WWF Intercontinental Championships match
The Rock (c) vs Ahmed Johnson - Too soon for the Rock to drop

Bonus Questions:

Which Match will score the highest rating on the card? HBK/Mankind

One of these matches will end in a no contest, which match will that be? Kane/Taker

Opening video package plays hyping tonight’s In Your House 1997 PPV which is live from Boston, Massachusetts. The electric Boston crowd is ready for what is in store for tonight, the advertised matches of Mankind vs Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin vs Triple H, and The Undertaker vs Kane will sure to bring the excitement and the energy to WWF In Your House 1997.

par8DzD.jpg

The Rock after his decisive victory over Ahmed Johnson stands on the top rope as he poses with the historic Intercontinental Championship. The Rock in his words, is the “People’s Champ” as the boo’s surround The Great One. The members of the Nation of Domination come and celebrate with The Rock as he is still your IC Champion!

Match_02.jpg

The Outlaws get the cheap victory over the veteran tag team of the Legion of Doom. The Outlaws make their way to the ramp as they proceed to do several crouch chops as they survive as the WWF Tag Team Champions. The Legion of Doom look on with disgust and disappointment as their chase into becoming the Tag Team Champion isn’t over yet.

G6AHm4h.jpg

Before his match with Ken Shamrock, Jeff Jarrett makes his way to ring with style and his luxurious Country Guitar. He mocks the Boston crowd calling them trash and they know nothing about what true talent is. He would dedicate a song to Boston just to further trash the place and the people living in it. Jarrett couldn’t finish his song however, as the “World’s Most Dangerous Man” Ken Shamrock interrupted his performance as the two clash in the next contest.

7AbHrAQ.jpg

Backstage we see Mankind giving his final words before his big main event match. He looks deranged and intense as he promises that he will inflicted pain towards the Heartbreak Kid. Mankind says that he’s willing to risk everything to become the WWF World Heavyweight Champion, no matter how difficulty that task may seem with the odds in DX’s favor, he will try to walk as the new World Champ.

Steve Austin celebrates his hard fought win against Triple H. Austin celebrates in the ring with two cold cans of beer as he drinks them. The crowd cheer for the Rattlesnake! Austin’s next step to superstardom is on the horizon with the Royal Rumble match coming up next month.

L1p8omS.jpg

Kane and The Undertaker’s match ended in a no contest as the referee of the match lost control and threw the match out, obviously this rivalry between the two brothers is certainly not over. The Undertaker and Kane would brawl to the back until Officials finally separated the two.

V9dEAtF.jpg

After what was an exciting and physical match, Shawn Michaels stands on top as still the WWF World Heavyweight Championship. The rest of D-Generation X come out to celebrate with Michaels as Road Dogg, Billy Gunn, Chyna, and bandaged up Triple H make their way to the ring. It seems that the PPV is over until suddenly someone enters in the ring and the entire crowd erupt in excitement. Shawn Michaels looks back and sees that its Owen Hart! The last remaining Hart brother in the WWF. D-Generation X look in complete shock as Owen stares down HBK. He lays out each member of DX with HBK aborting. HBK looks on as Owen clearly wants to get his hands on Shawn. The PPV fades to black with Owen returning to the World Wrestling Federation.

Pretty good PPV overall.

Rock and Ahmed had a very strong opening, good to see they have chemistry with each other which definatly helps a lot here. Rocky retaining was predictable since he just won the title IRL.

Very good tag team match between the Outlaws and Legion of Doom. Again the champs retaining was the right call as they had just won the titles as well.

The Triple Threat Match better than I expected. A very strong carry by Vader there and both Blackman and Goldust look good in defeat.

Really sucks Ken Shamrock and Jeff Jarrett didn't click. They could otherwise have been a nice feud but the chemistry penalty hurted it.

The Light Heavyweights will be a long term project to build but considering there pops Brian and TAKA did a nice job. Nice to see Brian pick up that title win I bet his dad was proud.

Seeing Austin and HHH only get an 84 makes me realize how they will do one year down the line once you built them both further. Will be a good match to look for later down the line.

Undertaker with the performance of the night with a very nice carry of Kane. We haven't seen the last of them both.

Finally a very good World Title Match. Interesting that Mankind outperformed Shawn here both in the ring and with that pre-match promo and now Owen is setting himself as the next chellanger for the Royal Rumble which should be very interesting.

Overall pretty good show and can't wait to see Starrcade from Sheridan next.

"Hollywood" Hulk Hogan (c) vs. Sting - WCW World Heavyweight Championship

A feud with eighteen months history. After Eric Bischoff announced Bret Hart would be joining the New World Order, "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan called it proof of World Championship Wrestling not only being the top dog in the business, but called it validation that himself and Eric Bischoff were good for the company. He called out Sting for wanting to end the New World Order and its riches, a point which Diamond Dallas Page and Ric Flair would interrupt and disagree with. "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan and his trusted associates, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall would defeat Diamond Dallas Page and his chosen partners, Lex Luger and The Giant, as Ric Flair watched on from ringside. Post-match The Outsiders began to beat down the trio of fallen soldiers as "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan kept Ric Flair at ringside, until Sting descended from the rafters and scared the group off, pointing his iconic baseball bat at The Hulkster. This lead to Hogan opening the following Nitro, claiming in spite of the fact he ran from Sting the week prior, he was not scared of his Starrcade opposition. Lex Luger interrupted this time around demanding that he and Hogan have a proper conclusion to their battle last week. Luger claims he would have pinned Hogan if it had been a singles match, goading the WCW World Heavyweight Championship holder into battle. "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan would be victorious due to help from Curt Hennig, both Diamond Dallas Page and The Giant attempted to save Luger from a post-match attack, and Sting was forced to watch from the rafters as the entire New World Order legion took their frustrations out on Lex Luger.

A challenge was issued to Kevin Nash and Scott Hall the following WCW Nitro. Diamond Dallas Page and The Giant would later fight and defeat them in tag team action. Naturally "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan came out and ordered a beat down of the duo, claiming that Sting wasn't around to save them now. However, Ric Flair came out from the back and ignited a comeback for the trio and Sting indeed was around, coming from the rafters and assisting in clearing the ring of "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan and his cronies. "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan squared off with The Giant with the WCW World Heavyweight Championship on the line in the go-home show, winning due to interference from Kevin Nash. Larry Zbyszko alongside WCW Commissioner JJ Dillon would overrule Eric Bischoff's verdict of that being a fitting finale to the show, making a six-man tag match there and then. "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan alongside Curt Hennig and Randy Savage would fall to Diamond Dallas Page, Ric Flair and The Giant, with Sting assisting in a post-match beatdown of the New World Order, standing triumphantly over the downed "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan as the show came to a closing.

Eric Bischoff vs. Larry Zbyzsko

Larry Zbyzsko had long been a thorn in the side of WCW Nitro General Manager, Eric Bischoff, their rivalry escalated the night of Bischoff announcing Bret Hart would be joining the New World Order. Larry Zbyzsko heavily disputed this, the two authority figures clashing and getting into a heated debate over Bret Hart's impending arrival. Larry Zbyzsko argued that although Hart's signing was a huge feat for the promotion, it was not at all down to Eric Bischoff, he further explained Bret Hart could be coming to end the New World Order all together a point which was shrugged off. Larry Zbyszko claimed Eric Bischoff was unfit to run the prime television show and that the New World Order were bad for business, especially in a time of war against the WWF. Eric Bischoff brought a contract to the show the following week, claiming that he would happily put control of WCW Nitro on the line in a bout against Larry Zbyszko. Larry Zbyszko signed before Eric Bischoff revealed Scott Hall would be wrestling in his place, but to the shock of both Bischoff and Hall, Zbyzsko had swapped Bischoff's contract with one of his own, which stated that Bischoff and Zbyzsko would wrestle and that Zbyszko could choose his own special referee to make sure things were split down the middle. On the go-home Nitro before WCW Starrcade, Larry Zbyzsko revealed this man would be none other than Bret Hart, claiming that if Hart was indeed going to join the New World Order then Bischoff had nothing to worry about. Bischoff was furious, the two men shook hands as Bischoff promised he and the New World Order would reign supreme long after Bret Hart's arrival to World Championship Wrestling.

Kevin Nash vs. The Giant

Kevin Nash has long has problems with The Giant, the two athletes being the bigger men of the promotion where the big boys play. These problems escalated on the first December episode of Nitro where Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and New World Order leader "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan defeated and then attacked The Giant alongside Diamond Dallas Page and Lex Luger. The following week Kevin Nash had a sit-down interview, Scott Hall at his side, where he went into detail about his problems with The Giant, claiming that there was only one true giant in the promotion and that was him. In a second straight post-match attack The Giant would attempt to interfere and save Lex Luger from a New World Order beatdown but he was prevented due to the numbers game. The next WCW Nitro started with a brawl, The Giant assisting in clearing the ring of Kevin Nash and the New World Order, and the same would commence after the main event of that same show, in which Diamond Dallas Page and The Giant got the better of The Outsiders, leaving Kevin Nash seething. The Giant would have a WCW World Heavyweight Championship match on the go-home show, his chance to insert himself into the WCW Starrcade main event in a big way. But, due to interference from Kevin Nash, "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan would best him. The match was turned into a six-man, with The Giant winning alongside Diamond Dallas Page and Ric Flair, before the show would go off the air as a huge, wide-scale attack on the New World Order would take place, The Giant being one of many victimised athletes to stand tall.
