Smackdown Preview (EP #15): “The Number One Contender”
The search for the next contender for Kevin Owen’s World Heavyweight Championship ends with one last match up against Randy Orton and Sheamus. It has been an interesting number of weeks for our competitors on Smackdown, with controversy and confusion surrounding the division. However, both Orton and Sheamus prevailed to emerge as the two top contenders after impressive victories throughout the past month.
Sheamus and Orton have both come from RAW over to Smackdown through inter-brand trades and the draft last month. Both men have reached the pinnacle of the WWE with Randy Orton winning the WWE Championship at last year’s Wrestlemania and holding it until Summerslam of that same year. Sheamus’ title reign was less than impressive and has been starved of opportunities to regain it, two years ago Sheamus won the World Heavyweight Championship at the Money in the Bank PPV, only to lose it five days later on an episode of Smackdown. It is fair to say both been are desperate to have an opportunity at the champion and we could be witnessing a brawl for the ages on this weeks Smackdown.
After speaking with Randy Orton earlier today, we were able to understand a little clearer on what he was thinking heading into this match. “I need this win, I’ve had my opportunities recently on RAW and I couldn’t win the big one. I found myself falling down the card and I wasn’t even appearing on PPVs”. Orton hasn’t appeared on a PPV since the Royal Rumble PPV and has been openly frustrated about his recent experiences on RAW. “I was misued and mistreated” Orton preclaimed. “I deserve better, I carried that brand for months and I couldn’t even get booked on the shows. I am here for a fresh start, I’m not going to wait around for my opportunity I’m going to force my hand and take what is rightfully mine”.
Sheamus on the other hand has been steadily building himself to this point. When his single’s career was revived late last year after demolishing his former friend Rob Van Dam, Sheamus has since leaped back into the title contention after impressive performances in the Elimination Chamber and now at the Extreme Rules PPV after defeating Daniel Bryan in an Extreme Rules match. Sheamus told BrendenPlayz.com that his win over Daniel Bryan was the last piece to the puzzle for his success. “Brogue Kicking that bearded troll was the best thing to happen to my career in years” Sheamus explained.
“I now feel like I belong among the other top tier names here on Smackdown. But not only do I just belong, I am better than them. I proved that when I beat Brock Lesnar a couple of weeks ago and I will prove it by Brogue Kicking Randy Orton out of title contention.” The interesting question is, how will Sheamus’ and Kevin Owen’s recent alliance affect their match at Payback? “Kevin Owen’s is very good, he’s impressed us all. But I am not afraid of him and after tagging with him I know his weakness. I know I can beat him and this is my best opportunity to finally reclaim the World Heavyweight Championship.”
Sheamus and Randy Orton will compete one on one on the next episode of Thursday Night Smackdown. Will the Celtic Warrior reach the pinnacle of Smackdown for the first time in two years or will he be upstaged by the legendary Apex Predator, Randy Orton.
